Develop your own Support team, You can’t grow a business alone.

Blog 4 – Support Team

This is one of the most important pieces of advice I can give to those out there who have a business idea and want to turn it into a trading business.

The lightbulb business idea happens daily. When you finally decide you are going to take the plunge and bring your idea into reality and start a business, this is when things become daunting.

Unless you have a support team behind you, in my personal opinion it is an impossibility to move forward. A support team is not just staff, it is family, friends, spouses, partners, etc.

Growing a business is hard work. You never know what the day will bring. If I can say one thing with absolute certainty it’s that there will be very few days in the year that a problem will not arise. I don’t think the level of commitment required is always considered by people when they’re first starting out. 

After taking over the family business, I thought I could do it all and thought I knew it all.  The word delegate just didn’t exist in my vocabulary. This only took me 8-10 years to realize. Believe it or not, it’s still a difficult thing to do. It got to the stage where I had to change my habits or I would be the one to suffer both mentally and physically. This is a subject that I will discuss further in upcoming posts.

If you can’t delegate daily tasks you will suffer.

The point I’m trying to get across in this blog is that no matter how confident you are or how much drive you have, you cannot do it alone. 

As a business owner and consultant, I’m very lucky to have an excellent team of staff behind me. Building a team to run your business is not simple. It takes constant meetings, constant changes within the team’s roles and more importantly time and patience.

I believe that a happy workforce is a successful workforce, this is something that I have always tried to implement. There is no hierarchy system in any business I’m involved in. In my opinion, they don’t exist. There is the business and there is the team. That is it. The person who cleans the floors or prepares the office for meetings is just as important as the Owner or Accountant of the company.

There is a role out there for anybody who is willing to work in any business, every individual out there has their strengths and weaknesses. It’s about finding the right role or position in a company to suit each individual and obviously, more importantly, a role that makes them happy.

I always say to my staff, the morning they wake up and dread going into work is the day they need to leave. This is something that applies to everybody out there in the working world today. 

Always remember you’re not a Tree, you can always move.

So just remember, There is no “I” in team but there is an “us” in business. If you think differently then you are starting a losing battle before it’s even begun.
